Why is everyone wanting to be a Search Engine?...

Well first the Rediff re-design of the home page (idiotic move I think cause they are a PORTAL) and then Twitter redesign.

I mean the Rediff redesign is also illogical from the revenue point of view I would think. They will never surpass Google in India (unless Google messes up big time) and I refuse to believe they will make more money via search than they do with display advertising. Maybe they wanted to de-clutter because decluttering is the 'in thing'. But I still think it wasn't wise.

In case of Twitter moving more towards search makes a lot of sense cause for most recent updates about an event (especially limited to a smaller location geographically) Twitter gives the best results because real people who are in or around the event are telling you what is happening but I don't see how it might help them increase more users being more active (in terms of posting more).

Some people are just more nocturnal than others...

And I am part of the some rather than the others.

It's not such a bad thing except whenever people start yelling at you at 2 AM to go to sleep or when you have to hit the sack early (because of reasons you cannot help) and end up tossing and turning cause you won't fall asleep. The worse thing about being a late sleepers (who needs 7-8 hours of sleep) though is not being able to wake up early :(

Anyway I htink in about 3 months I will have to go back to an earlier to bed and an earlier to rise routine (I think an early to bed and early to rise routine is totally out of the question).

Don't blame me for having FIXED ideas....it's genetic.

On FB this sounded fun but here it sounds serious. Anyway it's on a lighter note but true non the less hehe ;)

While I don't do too many tags any more, this is not too personal and quirky so taking it up.

1. My hands go into my sneakers before my feet.

Well I once wore my sneakers (which are slightly big because my just fitting ex-sneakers use to hurt my toes) and after about 5 minutes felt something around my toes. Too the shoe off (in the cab) thinking it must be a piece of paper or something. Put my hand it - felt like paper but when I shook the shoe nothing came out. Well if you already guessed it, you are smart than me then. Looked in and inside was this big cockroach. YUCKKK to say the least. Very disgusting. But of course the thing I will remember the most from the incident is my cousin screaming - 'throw the shoe out of the window' and I yelling back 'Are you crazy? This is my new Reebok and who the hell throws their shoe out like that?'. So now my hand goes in first to check whether the shoe is empty or not.



2. I wanted to be a storm chaser.

I doubt I would ever really have been one but I remember watching Twister and thinking 'WOW now that's EXACTLY what I want to grow up and do'. Weather was always fascinating. If there was a college around and good career prospects, I would have studied meteorology. Thankfully I didn't else I would have been working with the biggest idiots around.



3. I use (at least once in a while now but everyday while I was working) my mouse as if I were a lefty [meaning the primary and secondary button is switched - meaning on the left side my index finger is for left click]

Few months into my joining my job, I started getting TERRIBLE shoulder ache. My only solution was to switch the side of the mouse cause it was becoming impossible to work. Took me about 4 days to get use to. But was totally worth it cause gave me better alignment, and pain in my right shoulder stopped. I still remember my boss coming up to me and showing me something and I couldn't copy paste what he was asking because I had just switched sides. Very frustrating back then. But it was always fun later on to see people come to my desk to show me something on my machine and they going crazy with the mouse all ulta and alphabets ink missing from my keyboard. It would drive most people nuts. I'd eventually say 'okay you know what, just tell me what you want to do and I'll type and navigate'.



4. I have taken a break from work (assuming I go back to work in October - it will be a 1 year break) for no particular rhyme or reason.



5. I'd like to learn beatboxing.

Watched a few videos about it and realized it's way too tough and requires a lot of practice. So mostly giving up on wanting to learn. But it's cool making music with sounds from your mouth.



6. I never sing in front of people (don't even play antakshari at times for this reason) but find myself singing (or at least saying since I can't sing) the lyrics to the songs when I am alone.

Well sometimes I am in the hall and Mom or Dad or Sis will be around when I am "singing" but thats about it. Once Mom even commented saying 'You love singing don't you?' and I said 'No. Just cause I am singing doesn't mean I like singing. I like the lyrics and all' Lol. I don't know I myself find the habit weird. Though I must say Mom is always pleasantly surprised when I seem to know nearly all the lyrics of nearly 80% of the songs that are playing on TV. Tried to explain to her that most people would know them and she doesn't listen to the song enough number of times to pick the lines up.



7. I can't do mental math.

I totally draw a blank in my head when I have to do anything with numbers. Except simple addition or substraction. Even for these I need at least 3 times the time an normal person would use. It's quite funny that my job requires me to work around numbers. Most people I know professionally can't believe it when I tell them I am bad with numbers. But well such is the case. I wish I could change it but I can't seem to get even slightly better with the efforts I had put in so have given up now.

I didn't know that landmasses could move that much because of an earthquake.

Well actually my bad cause landmasses can move a lot more. The Andaman and Nicobar islands shifted south-west by around 4.1 feet (according to a wikipedia article) in the 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake.

Well seriously if I had missed it I would have kept thinking how pathetic that was. I don't even know how I forgot to set my alarm and stuff - Guess I was working and reading the night before and by the time I hit the sack, I was too tired to remember what day it was.

It's not like I am majorly into astronomy or anything but such events are wonderful. Not only are they rare and that's why more precious, they actually signify how everything is interconnected in the universe :)

Plus it's always fun to see in real life what you studied in books. Stuff that was boring (cause you couldn't imagine any of it) suddenly is so fascinating :)

Haven't been there in months. Well haven't been anywhere in months actually thanks to my foot. But anyway was so nice to be back and meet all my old colleagues :)

Well only the second movie I caught a morning show of.

But it was so worth waking up early to go see it. Had to make it to the show yesterday because I wasn't sure if it would be running today. Hehe there were a total of 13 people in the theatre including me.

Totally loved it - I mean X-men and Hugh Jackman....what's not to love??? :D

Hmmm I know more 'Karishma's than 'Neha's and 'Pooja's put together...

I don't know, I just find this strange because I thought 'Neha' was the most common female name in India and lots of people also mentioned 'Pooja' as being very common. Anyways it's all good :)

Primus fixed - Physio started again :)

Well finally back to Physio - though my feet are feeling way better than 2 months ago. Nearly walk around normally (in motion that is...the durations are not as long as before but will get there eventually) .

Totally hate such grey days - I think I suffer from SAD (at least mildly)...

Seriously I hate gloomy weather. It brings me down. I not only feel lethargic (which might be a commonly felt amongst people in such weather) but I also feel slightly depressed. Maybe I am exaggerating but maybe I am not.

Can't believe how many status messages I have seen today mentioning the Bandra-Worli Sea Link...

It's like all of Mumbai is obsessed with the BWSL...now I am not saying it's a bad thing but just I don't see what the big deal is.

Sure I am super glad that it's finally done and I can't believe that people are using it to travel back and forth (FINALLY) but I don't feel it's such a big deal.

Maybe the lack of excitement on my part is because it won't affect me directly (it could in the future but I doubt it. I think I will always take the train if I have to go beyond Bandra) or because I believe it won't make a huge difference in the 'development' of the city

Missing AdWords...hating that it won't be the same for long...

What a totally brilliantly made movie.

Apart from all the 'cuteness' and stuff what really struck me was how they showed so many emotions through the 2 characters - especially since the 2 characters hardly had facial features that would make emoting so simple. And yes I do understand that this is the magic of animation and they do this with animals and stuff but still it's so much easier cause those have eyes, a nose, a mouth, eyebrows etc. (I have not seen Cars so I might be a little bias)

Brilliant work through sound and gestures. Also hardly any dialogues.

Suvendu Roy of Titan Industries shares his inspirational encounter with a rickshaw driver in Mumbai Last Sunday, my wife, kid and I had to travel to Andheri from Bandra. When I waved at a passing auto rickshaw, little did I expect that this ride would be any different.

As we set off, my eyes fell on a few magazines (kept in an aircraft style pouch) behind the driver's back rest. I looked in front and there was a small TV. The driver had put on the Doordarshan channel.


My wife and I looked at each other with disbelief and amusement. In front of me was a small first-aid box with cotton, dettol and some medicines. This was enough for me to realize that I was in a special vehicle. Then I looked around again, and discovered more - there was a radio, fire extinguisher, wall clock, calendar, and pictures and symbols of all faiths - from Islam and Christianity to Buddhism, Hinduism and Sikhism.


There were also pictures of the heroes of 26/11- Kamte, Salaskar, Karkare and Unnikrishnan. I realized that not only my vehicle, but also my driver was special. I started chatting with him and the initial sense of ridicule and disbelief gradually diminished. I gathered that he had been driving an auto rickshaw for the past 8-9 years; he had lost his job when his employer's plastic company was shut down. He had two school-going children, and he drove from 8 in the morning till 10 at night. No break unless he was unwell. "Sahab, ghar mein baith ke TV dekh kar kya faida? Do paisa income karega toh future mein kaam aayega." (Sir, what's the use of simply sitting at home and watching TV? If I earn some income, then it will be useful in the future.) We realized that we had come across a man who represents Mumbai – the spirit of work, the spirit of travel and the spirit of excelling in life. I asked him whether he does anything else as I figured that he did not have too much spare time. He said that he goes to an old age home for women in Andheri once a week or whenever he has some extra income, where he donates tooth brushes, toothpastes, soap, hair oil, and other items of daily use. He pointed out to a painted message below the meter that read: "25 per cent discount on metered fare for the handicapped. Free rides for blind passengers up to Rs50". He also said that his auto was mentioned on Radio Mirchi twice by the station RJs. The Marathi press in Mumbai know about him and have written a few pieces on him and his vehicle.


My wife and I were struck with awe. The man was a HERO! A hero who deserves all our respect. I know that my son, once he grows up, will realize that we have met a genuine hero. He has put questions to me such as why should we help other people? will try to keep this incident alive in his memory. Our journey came to an end; 45 minutes of a lesson in humility, selflessness and of a hero-worshipping Mumbai - my temporary home. We disembarked, and all I could do was to pay him a tip that would hardly cover a free ride for a blind man.

Well now our lift is not working...which means either sitting home all day or climbing up and down 5+ stories....now climbing up wouldn't be a huge issue but climbing down with my foot the way it is might be a problem.

Which means if I'm home, my physio gets delayed, my recovery gets delayed, my classes get delayed, my other plans get delayed...

Well lets hope the 15 days they said it will take for the lift to start working is a number buffered by about 3 times :) (which it might just be)

Yup finally cast my vote this time around.

Realized the importance of knowing people who know things. Last time around I was determined to go but didn't have a voters ID and the slip that came home had my wrong age, with my name and address wrongly spelled out and I thought I would first have to get those corrected before I can vote.

This year had my ID and even though the paper that came home had errors, someone had already told me that it doesn't matter so I shouldn't worry about wrong details :D

Finally I feel like a responsible citizen (or at least a little more responsible since I turned 18) of this country :)

Now I have seen everything...

Seriously I was on a poker table where people (strangers) were trying to hook up...they exchanged email IDs and I think even a phone number went around in the small little chat window.

Poker Zombies...

If you were wondering where I have disappeared to, I haven't actually disappeared. I am around...online for most of the time. But it's just that I have been turned into a Zombie...A Poker Zombie.

So I basically spends hours and hours on end playing poker on FB. It's fun. A game of luck and smarts together :)

But the title says Zombies and not Zombie mainly because my cousin taught me and I got hooked, and I taught her sisters and she got hooked too hehe. So the 2 of us sit and play poker all the time or at least whenever either of us is on the computer.

So if I am not posting or visiting your blog and commenting, please don't mind...I am most probably on a table trying to earn free chips :)

What a year...lots of my friends getting engaged this year...

Well okay not all are getting engaged, but at least finding success in their love life.

Congratulations to all my friends who have either found their match, got engaged or got parent approvals in the last few months :D

Sprained my damned foot again...

I don't really like doctors. There isn't any specific reason except that I think the dislike is in my genes. Okay so I am kidding. It's more nurture than nature at work here. Not too many people in my family are comfortable with doctors and hospitals (except my grandparents when it comes to doctors).


Anyway about 4 - 5 years ago, I tripped (WHILE TRYING TO WALK) and hurt my right ankle/foot quite badly. Thought it was a sprain. It was either a ligament tear or a hairline fracture. I kept ignoring going to a doc but mainly because I couldn't walk and the task of just getting out of my building would have been a very painful task. Anyway I actually can't bend my last two toes properly now. Of course was in quite a state of shock when I realized I can't bend my toes. Horrified really but it didn't worsen my balance or anything and I had feeling in them, so I was okay with it.


On Monday, I again hurt the same foot. Not as badly as last time, but still quite bad, of course the pain has been subsiding since Monday which is a good thing but I still need to keep it bandaged all the time. On Monday I was remembering the last time and it scared the hell out of me. Of course I thought that this time I'll go to a doc right away but when I woke up on Tuesday I felt so much less pain that I was sure it isn't a tear or a fracture. I don't like of course that I am still limping after 3 whole days but I know it's not like last time so I am a little relieved.


Hopefully by tomorrow I will be able to get out of the house and go attend my class. And again it's not like I was playing football or dancing or any of that. I was walking.

What if I am a better actor than you think I am...?

Serious...what if you think I am the way I am only because I want you to think I am that way?

So the original status message was 'What if I am smarter than you think I am...?' and the reason behind putting it that way was to see what people would say and in 2 days put 'What if I am more stupid than you think I am...?' which really is the original actual question. But you know when people read something like that, they come and tell you 'oh come on, don't be silly' instead of actually thinking about it.

But anyway after a small chat with a friend and explaining what I was meaning, the idea of saying 'better actor' came to me and it sort of fits :)

So what if I am just acting to be all smart and you are falling for it?


P.S. - Thanks for the new name Bhavna - 'The Pretender' sounds very interesting. Hehe even better than 'The Troubleshooter' or 'The Updater'.

Although access to drinking water has improved, the World Bank estimates that 21% of communicable diseases in India are related to unsafe water. In India, diarrhea alone causes more than 1,600 deaths daily—the same as if eight 200-person jumbo-jets crashed to the ground each day. Hygiene practices also continue to be a problem in India. Dizzy with HTML tags

Don't you just hate when you know something well enough to start something up but don't know it well enough to get it finished quickly?

Learning HTML and decided (yesterday) to create a web layout using HTML (just for practice. I do know that dreamweaver exists). After about 40 mins of trial and error my head was just buzzing with codes and numbers and percentages and I don't know what not.

So the site is about 50% done if I leave it in the basic simple structure I created. But I think I should do more work on it and use more of the tags that I have learned. After all it is just for practice.

Am wondering if Colours (TV channel) is being run by a group of feminists...

Seriously look at all the women oriented stuff there.

Now I understand that even saas bahu serials revolved around women and stuff but this is different. Shows on Colours is more social in nature. They talk about woman upliftment, female infanticide, traditions and customs etc.

While I am glad that the one show I watch on the channel off and on helps me be grateful about being an educated, well off woman in urban India, I think the channel is pushing this whole social thing a little tooooo far.

But I guess I shouldn't talk. Most women (/families) would watch at least 3 saas bahu shows even though all had nearly the same thing going on in the story (just at different points in time).

Anyway Balika Vadhu is a great show. It is nicely made. I would recommend it anyday. At least the way it is going on now. I hope it doesn't go down hill. I'd rather have makes of a show end a serial than watch much loved serials becoming crappier and crappier.

A channel asking to stop a show because of TRP rating falling is a good thing in a way. It means that the show has outlived its popularity and acceptance. I'd rather that a show I like end nicely than fall from it's greatness in such a manner.

Gmail has ruined me...

I don't delete emails anymore. I mean Gmail doesn't even give you the size of the mail so I am thinking this is exactly what they want of people. But why???

Haha okay my attempt to be over dramatic is failing but seriously I don't remember 'cleaning out' my Gmail inbox in a long time. Which I use to regularly do with my Hotmail and Yahoo accounts.

Sure it doesn't matter and I am barely using the space they are providing but I always think it is important to get rid of those things which are not important. Free youself and things around you.

Even their more advance comparison of brands ummm game is great cause it shows how one brand is viewed in line with the other. Of course the real deal would be if the 2 brands being compared are in the same industry.

I am really sad about what kind of justice system our country has. Firstly I don't find this logical. It's like filing a case on Ratan Tata cause terrorists entered the Taj and killed innocent people there. And of course everyone knows that hotels are sort targets. Especially after so many attacks globally. Makes sense? No it doesn't.

Anyway my issue isn't about who gets charged or not (which in itself is a VERY SERIOUS issue) but why the justice system feels like a joke to me today is that people who actually lead to people dying are roaming around freely and here you catch some poor kid and tell him he has to face charges cause he created some community and a death threat was posted there.

Seriously where is our sense of trival and non-trivial?

Why is it that real criminals are not behind bars and the justice system doesn't work so hard to put them behind bars?

Why is it that if there was any other community where there was a death threat against a common man, we won't see 'justice' or at least such quick 'justice'?

It just makes me sad...

I don't mean in the manner where one has enough money to be a 'spend-thrift' all the time. But if money is needed it should be there. If it's not then life just sucks.

Totally loving Google Maps...

I have used Google Maps in the past but only recently saw the whole 'street view' and traffic information and local transport options.

The good thing is that some of these are even present outside of the US so it seems that Google's objective is to give these features globally (to whatever extent they can) as and when possible.

Of course there is a down side to everything but I can't wait for Google Maps to do all of this in India.


I am obviously wondering if Google can monetize maps some more other than just Local Business Ads. Even their API is free. Man if AdWords wasn't as big as it is, I wonder if Google would have been able to do whatever it does today.

Gmail has ruined me

The problem with having unlimited storage space is that I don't end up deleting any emails anymore.

How does it matter you ask? Well anything that isn't needed/wanted should be thrown away no matter how much space you have for it.

We sort of had a fire incident (electric) in our house. Thankfully no major damage. I keep telling mom we need to own a fire extinguisher. And her standard answer is 'what's the use they expire' and me and my sis get really annoyed at that. Once it expires you buy a new can. Simple. But no.

Lets hope this fire was enough to make her listen to us.

Regret

Of all the things I wished I had started earlier in life, reading a newspaper would be somewhere on the top of the list.


(Reading in general too but I honestly believe I had some form of a learning disability when I was younger and hated reading so much that I wouldn't wish I did more of it as a kid)

What a totallyyyy wasted day...

It's been such a huge waste of a day that I can't even believe it.

Especially since there were so many thing I was suppose to do. I mean I canceled an appointment for today just so I could go ahead with my earlier made plans.

Was suppose to go for an introduction to the Landmark Forum this morning. But woke up at 8:30 with a back ache so thought I'd sleep for another half an hour and then rush to make it there by 10. Forgot to set an alarm for 9 and woke up at 9:45 by an SMS of the friend who invited me asking if I was making it or not. Well even if I ran out in my PJs I wouldn't have made it because it would take at least 18 minutes in a taxi with no traffic and green signals all the way.

Woke up at 11:40 and messaged my cousin to confirm our movie plans and she said she couldn't make it because she had to go out.

Figured I'd just land up at the Kala Ghoda Festival since I barely saw anything yesterday but the 2 people I asked couldn't make it. So I decided no issues, I'll go myself but had to wait for my parents to get home and they got back at 5 but which time I was already lazy to go. Plus had to help my sis get ready for her friends Sangeet party (talk about role reversal - could never have imagined myself helping someone get dressed up etc. Not that I did much). By the time she left it was 6ish and KGAF plans were totally out the door. So ended up watching lots of TV - USELESS TV.

It's quite funny that when I was doing important things in life, I didn't mind wasting time watching some rubbish on TV but now that I don't have important things to do, I find myself irritated when there is nothing to watch on television. In the last couple of months I have surfed channels (to catch a program rather than to avoid ads) like never before. And while on the surface this seems so silly I think it is logical. When I was doing something important most of the time, watching TV was a relaxing activity. It didn't matter what was on, because I wasn't watching TV with any objective other than to watch TV but now I am so relaxed most of the time, I don't need additional relaxation. Instead if I am watching TV, it has to add value. It can't be anything random and crap.

Anyway henceforth I swear to never have such a totally wasted day ever again unless I want a day to be like that - meaning by choice.

Thanks to some show on MTV I came across Pixlr. I haven't checked it out in detail (since I already have Photoshop CS on my machine) but from whatever little I saw of it, I am sure that it is a great free photo editing tool and better than other such tools out there.

Do check it out. You can do more than just edit photos of course. You can use it just like you would use Photoshop.

The super power of poking eyes out.

I was in a train some weeks ago (this post is long over due) and a train just came into the next platform and the announcer mentioned that this was a 'Ladies Special' train to Borivali (or some other place I don't remember). And there are these 2 girls. They looked like college kids so I am assuming that they wouldn't be over 17-18 years of age. One looks to the other and says (with disdain) 'Ladies Special? I didn't even know they have such trains. As if a ladies compartment wasn't bad enough'. Her other friend had the same kind of scorn on her face.

I felt like going up to them both and shaking them. I was thinking 'wow how retarded could these girls be? If she is so keep to maybe travel all the way home with some stupid crush she has, she can just get into the general compartment. Why is she even bothering with the ladies compartment? So silly. So naive'. And in that moment my anger and shock turned to happiness for those girls. The only reason the girl who made the statement, would make such a statement would be if she had never been a victim of harassment. I couldn't believe I was in front of a 16 year old who hadn't faced hearing lewd comments, having men brush past on purpose, being followed (stalked), being stared etc etc. I mean it was the only logical explanation. This girl was either one very lucky girl or very oblivious to what happened around her.

I remember getting of the train thinking how I wished that she could always make a face of disgust at the thought of a Ladies Special Train.

I don't know any woman who hasn't face some sort of harassment because of her gender. It is very jarring when men just stare, or make comments, or brush past etc. What is more torturous is when women can't do anything when such instances happen. I love women who slap a guy in the middle of anywhere rather than freeze in shock and watch some ass**** walk away.

I remember being at a station with these 2 friends of mine and the female friend says 'oh man that guy is following me' and she goes on to explain how she saw him the day before at the station and that morning. He even tried to talk to her but she just walked away. And there he was just waiting on the platform. We saw a bunch of trains pass by but he didn't get on. Our male friend couldn't believe that the guy was waiting for this friend to get to that side of the platform so that either he could approach her again or get onto the train she got onto. And he was more shocked when she said that she once had a guy follow her from the station right up to her building. Both of them already knew my scare story (which I am not going to share here :)) and I decided to do a little survey. The next day 4 out of 5 of my friends told me that they had been stalked (well at least followed) at some point of time.Not only is it uncomfortable but it is VERY scary. I don't get why some men think they have the right to do anything they like.

Whenever I used to get asked what sort of super power would you want, as a kid I would give various answers. When I grew up though I thought the question was stupid and wouldn't bother even thinking forget answering. Till one day it struck me that if I could have a super power, it would be to poke the eyes out of the people I wanted.

There are just too many people out there to just stare. I hate it. I think most women would hate it. [I honestly don't understand how women change their outlook if the guy staring at them is good looking. I mean WTF. Staring is staring. How can you be happy about it?]. And whenever I get stared at or women/girls around me get stared, I wish I could just poke the ass***** eyes out. 'You can't help but stare? Here let me help you. *Poof eyes gone*. There you want have the problem or not being able to look away anymore'.


Anyway I could go on and on. Post didn't come out the way I wanted but doesn't matter. Just thinking about the injustice women face on a daily basis tires me.



P.S. - I do wish I had some super powers....If anyone is in a position to give, I am ready to take :)

They give you NEWS in 5 sentences. I mean it's brilliant how you get to know everything you would need to know just by reading their feeds. No wasted time on irrelevant things. And if you are super interested in any particular article you can just Google it and find a site with more details.
