Another Oil Spill :@....

The :@ creates an emoticon - angry face.

I can't understand why nothing substantial is getting done to stop oil spills. I mean everyone knows that these cause lots of damage to the environment, so why is it that we can build in more safety to see that oil spills don't happen the way they are happening right now. Sure you can stop a disaster from happening. Ships will break, they will sink, but I am sure a few more measures can be added to try and prevent so much damage.

I mean what are shipping companies not bothered about how much oil actually gets wasted? This is one of the reason, I keep praying that oil prices keep increasing. Oil should be so dear that any leakage or loss would be unbearably expensive and therefore systems / technologies, would come into place to prevent wastage.

Accidents do happen .. whether due to human error, or due to machinery failure, or sometimes a combination of the two.

I understand you are angry at the direct consequences of an oil spill. At the same time, the indirect consequences are a lot worse .. unfortunately they do not make the same impact.

I always feel that if we had a report that showed cost in money terms for things done/not done, it would make people realize so much more easily the impact of things.

For instance, if there was a monetary number to the cost of bad roads in terms of - 1) doctors bills for bad backs, pregnancy issues, etc 2)Import bill increase for increase in usage of petroleum (either to take a longer smoother route or for traffic jams) 3)Total damage to cars 4)Damage to utilities that might be under these roads (Due to exposure, etc) like pipelines 5)Productivity lost due to longer time taken in travel etc etc. I am sure most people would realize that the cost to repair these roads would be much less than what we are actually paying for bad roads.

I hate to take the pessimistic view on this, but in the end, if it does'nt affect a person directly, they will be indifferent to it.

As you mentioned, I would agree with your idea of raising oil prices .. that will surely be noticed by everyone.

It's not pessimistic - it's realistic

Just another Horrifying sin by humans!

These Super-Tankers should be penalized so heavily for any such accidents, that they won’t dare to afford any spills in near future.

Good point but you are going to keep getting some loop hole from the system - and what happens when you have a ship that got damaged due to things like storms?

You think thats gonna solve the problem?!! they'd go find new energy source! oil will keep spilling, creatures dying and oil companies will keep minting money and we'll be paying for all of it.

I think the real problem is that no one REALLY wants to solve the problem. At least not the people who have the ability to do it.

mmm... you may be right on that. Yeah. that makes sense. But rising oil prices ain't the way to go. There must be a better way. Like coming up with another way to transport oil. Somthing like that....

I am not suggesting it as a solution - what I meant was that if it would happen, then oil spills would be avoided because companies wouldn't have been able to afford an oil spill so would build technologies that would avoid it.

I meant by solution, the method you are suggesting to get their attention. These guys are billionaires. They will never know the pinch because of a spill here and a spill there. They own hundreds of wells that run exremely deep like their pockets. This is not going to get their attention. shipping companies don't care as long as they get paid. insurance covers everything. Nobody stands to lose except gen. public and nature. this being the case ur prayer if answered wud put me and others in a difficult position.;) Your intention might be noble but change ur prayer a wee bit and ask for another efficient energy source. My suggestion. God may be listening!!
