World AIDS Day today.
Someone once asked me about what the scariest thing would be for mankind. I thought of Dooms Day scenarios - of meteors hitting the earth, of global warming melting ice caps and submerging all land, of world war 3 with nuclear weapons, etc etc.
A few years ago I thought up the worst scenario possible. Imagine AIDS spreading via mosquito bites. Better still imagine AIDS becoming an air borne disease. The reason this scenario is the worst possible is because it is the most realistic and also the soonest possible occurrence. I mean how long does it take for a virus to mutate? A few years? A few decades?
While researchers are hard at work trying to find a cure, we people are being stupid and spreading the HIV virus very rapidly. I am sure that within a decade there will be a medical cure - one that will kill the virus or even maybe immunize us, not one that will only help us live a little longer. But the reality of today is that millions of people are dying because of AIDS, millions are suffering everyday and millions are catching the disease every year.
3 things make me not only question how foolish we are but also make me upset.
1) We could be destroying a cure to this by cutting down the Amazon forest the way we are.
2) Maybe if we were more open as a nation, India wouldn't be facing the 'crisis' it is facing today. We need to talk about AIDS, we need to see that our kids are educated about it.
3) AIDS is neither a truck drivers disease only nor a disease only of a super rich girl who acts like a slut. It can happen to anyone.
