The Secret Of Adulthood. Lots of people like this. It is worth checking out. It only takes a minute.

:) My favourite - You know as much as most people.

The presentation is key. If the lines came in any other format, the impact would have been different.

Interesting stuff -

Don't know how much of this is true. Picked it up from LiveScience.com

Can rocks float?
Yes.In a volcanic eruption , the violent separation of gas from lava produces a "frothy" rock called pumice, loaded with gas bubbles. Some of it can float, geologists say.

Can rocks grow?
Yes, but observing the process is less interesting than watching paint dry. Rocks called iron-manganese crusts grow on mountains under the sea. The crusts precipitate material slowly from seawater, growing about 1 millimeter every million years. Your fingernails grow about the same amount every two weeks.

Estimates vary, but the USGS says at least 1,000 million grams, or roughly 1,000 tons of material enters the atmosphere every year and makes its way to Earth's surface. One group of scientists claims microbes rain down from space, too, and that extraterrestrial organisms are responsible for flu epidemics .

How far does regular dust blow in the wind?
A 1999 study showed that African dust finds its way to Florida and can help push parts of the state over the prescribed air quality limit for particulate matter set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The dust is kicked up by high winds in North Africa and carried as high as 20,000 feet (6,100 meters), where it's caught up in the trade winds and carried across the sea. Dust from China makes its way to North America, too.

Because the planet rotates and is more flexible than you might imagine, it bulges at the midsection, creating a sort of pumpkin shape. The bulge was lessening for centuries but now, suddenly, it is growing, a recent study showed. Accelerated melting of Earth's glaciers is taking the blame for the gain in equatorial girth.

The world's deadliest recorded earthquake occurred in 1557 in central China. It struck a region where most people lived in caves carved from soft rock. The dwellings collapsed, killing an estimated 830,000 people. In 1976 another deadly temblor struck Tangshan, China. More than 250,000 people were killed.

What was the strongest earthquake in recent times?
A 1960 Chilean earthquake, which occurred off the coast, had a magnitude of 9.6 and broke a fault more than 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) long. An earthquake like that under a major city would challenge the best construction techniques.

The distance from the surface of Earth to the center is about 3,963 miles (6,378 kilometers). Much of Earth is fluid. The mostly solid skin of the planet is only 41 miles (66 kilometers) thick -- thinner than the skin of an apple, relatively speaking.

Has the Moon always been so close?
It used to be much closer! A billion years ago, the Moon was in a tighter orbit, taking just 20 days to go around us and make a month. A day on Earth back then was only 18 hours long. The Moon is still moving away -- about 1.6 inches (4 centimeters) a year. Meanwhile, Earth's rotation is slowing down, lengthening our days. In the distant future, a day will be 960 hours long!

What's the driest place on Earth?
A place called Arica, in Chile, gets just 0.03 inches (0.76 millimeters) of rain per year. At that rate, it would take a century to fill a coffee cup.

What is the wettest place on Earth?
Lloro, Colombia averages 523.6 inches of rainfall a year, or more than 40 feet (13 meters). That's about 10 times more than fairly wet major cities in Europe or the United States. [I always thought it was Mausamram/Cherrapunji]

Pain...

Been suffering from a sever ear ache.

Physical pain is the worst thing that a person can experience.

My heart goes out to those people who have to live with pain as a part of their life.

Can't wait for it to be tomorrow so that I can visit my ENT.

Sickening...

I hate how everything in this country is a political issue. Now even terrorism has become just a way to show political parties in bad light.

Pathetic.

LAUGHING...

A LOT.

Lol. Monicaaaaaaaaaaaaa what a hilarious conversation. We should catch up like that more often. And before every call you should see/meet 'highly eligible' guys lol.

Highlight of the conversation -
'Men will be boys'
'Under music he mentions Britney Spears 5 times'

Btw I thought for the question you asked me and I asked you back, you were going to say Sameer :) lol he cropped up so surprisingly in the conversation. By Mr.D stole the show.

Best Video

I happened to catch this fantastic 5 second video.

I love thunder and lightening. While this doesn't really capture lightening, it at least captures it's effect.

If you have a slow internet, I would suggest you keep it paused till the video is fully loaded.

[I am putting the video up on this blog too, just so that I can pass the link around to people - Manoj and Amol - especially for you two - told you it's brilliant :)]

Got to mentally prepare myself...

It's like I nearly touched the finish line and now the finish line has been move further down.

It's just a matter of being more focused and pushing myself harder to get to the finish.

:)

I was on the phone for 40 minutes today with someone I have known for nearly a year and a half. And guess what, I came to know she has 2 kids. Didn't even know she was married.

It's so strange how you know people but don't really know them. We spoke about so much stuff - her work place, my work, how much her competitors suck, her staff, me having family in HK and Manila and she having family in Sydney and US, the weather, people we both know, etc etc. It was a fun conversation. Mainly because I have known Manjula for so long but haven't really know much about her and now I filled in a lot more paint into the picture.

:) It was great talking to you Manjula, let's hope we do it more often.

Tomorrow (or next week) I will call her Meera :)

Question Time - Solitaire (Sneha - to avoid confusion)

Do you analyze all the comments that people leave behind at your blog? Not necessarily intentionally but is it that if someone says X you know it means ABC and if someone says Y you equate it to some PQR?

Didn't have an email address to write to you so put the question up here (as this is the blog you visit). You can reply to me on email if you don't want to here. The address is on my profile page.

Just curious - you don't even have to reply if you don't want to.

Graphology...

Got out this old handwriting analysis book I had somewhere in some drawer.

:)

I love it. Even though it's a pseudoscience, it is damn interesting. And to some extent it is very believable or at least some aspects of it. I mean sure if you are angry you will have pressured writing. Or if you are in a hurry, then the dots on your i's and the slashes on your t's will be more toward the right. Not all of it I would accept but at the end of the day it's fun. Not that have analysed anyones handwriting but it's interesting to know.

The other pseudoscience I am very interested in is posture analysis. Maybe I'll dig up a book on that too.

Happy Belated Birthday Sumita...

Sorry I forgot to wish you ON your birthday.

Hope you had a blast :)

Rehem Kare...

Totally love this song from Cash.

Not uploading the video (cause I don't like it) but it got me thinking about why we can't have an audio version of something like youtube. An audio sharing site. Might not be as popular but I have thought of an audio-sharing site at least half a dozen times in this year.

www.climatecrisis.net

When will people realize that climate change is not going to affect all of us personally. It won't be direct and disastrous for every single one of us.

We have to just believe that climate change is affecting us badly and that pollutions WILL affect not just climate but the entire earth.

I swear I hate the debate on Global Warming and whether humans are speeding it up or not. And I bet even just on my blogs you will find I have said this a number of times. The point is pollutions in the atmosphere, the soil, the seas is obviously NOT GOOD. And yet we keep pollution.

Just watch The Inconvenient Truth today. Didn't like how it was made. It was highly dramatized around Al Gore. The whole movie seemed like his life struggle to do something rather than the real issue at hand.

Anyway the one thing I hate about most activists is that they want people to totally turn over a new leaf. They want extremist action. I think it would ALWAYS be wiser to ask LOTS of people to make little changes then get a few people to make a lot of changes. There are multiple reasons I think a 'small impact by large group' is a better approach. One of the most obvious being that more people are involved. They are aware. The other being that I think 1000 people shutting the tap while brushing their teeth would have more of an impact than 10 people switching to a life with only public transport. The other obvious thing is that it is easier to get lots of people to turn of their tap while they brush than it is to get people to not depend on their cars.

You give people ways to conserve resources which will not change their lifestyle majorly, they will accept the change. But you ask someone to make a change that will change the way they are use to living - well best of luck.

Small changes big difference - A game of the masses. Not just a handful of people.

Aghhhh I hate just ranting about this stuff. An environmental NGO is I think where I will be working for the next 3 months. It makes the most sense. It's something I am passionate about. I wouldn't need patience I do not have (like when it comes to teaching kids). It's a sphere of work I think needs a lot more attention than it's getting.

ClimateCrisis.net is the official website of 'an inconvenient truth'.

Digicam or Handycam?...

I want a new digicam and soon. Not that my current one isn't good. It's just that I want one which negates shaky hands. Sometimes a bad workman should get extra good tools :)

The only thing I am wondering is whether I should get a digicam or finally go and get myself a video camera. I am sure that I would take more pictures than I would movies but a handycam is something I have wanted for a long time. And I do have a digital camera and a mobile phone with a camera (which takes decent pictures many a times).

More than price my issue is using the gadget. Anyway can't do anything till the end of the money. Hehe no money in the bank currently. So I have a while to decide. Hopefully by next month end, I'll be poorer in my back but invested in a beautiful device that captures events.

Fleeting thought - when will the day come when virtual reality devices will get fed by our real life experiences and we will be able to 'relive' the experiences we want to. A picture never does justice to a place/moment. Neither does a video. Being at a certain place at a certain time can never be captured. Even our feelings (when we were at that place at that time) fade faster than we would like (note I am talking about happy feelings, happy moments, happy places etc). Ah waiting for technology that you know could become reality gives a certain sort of comfort.

Fever...

:(

I hate being sick.

Feeling miserable is something I don't ever want to get accustomed to.

Will most probably take tomorrow off also.

A post-grad finally...

:)

Results for M.Com. - II held on APR 2008

The result of seat number 20xxx is Passed with First Class
Congratulations

The reason I put 'finally' up there is because 2 years is a long time to finish a course that can get done in 40 days.

Also it isn't like MCom is a huge deal but still having a Master Degree no matter how useless, is a feeling of its own.

I don't understand Poetry.

HiPPO

Was watching a webinar yesterday and I came across this cool word - HiPPO.
The discussion was about changes to a website and the person was talking about how changes usually happen and his slide was as follows -

It looks good (or something on the lines)
HiPPO
Before & After

1 and 3 are easy. 1 talks about how you make a change because you think a change is good. 3 is the ideal way to do things. Do a before and after testing when making changes. HiPPO is actually common practice sometimes but never had such a 'catchy' name for it. It stands for Highest Paid Person in the Organisation. The speak was saying how changes can happen because the HiPPO says so or how you go ask the HiPPO what should be done and they give you an answer (cause mostly they are the most experienced or knowledgeable).

Hail HiPPO.

Love Vodafone's Chota Credit ad...

It's Brilliant.

Tragic..

The India cricket team is full of CHOKERS. The players seem to choke every time they are in important matches.

WhatAGreatIdea...

http://www.whatagreatidea.com/

Chic Thompson's website. It's pretty interesting. The 'Stuck' section mentions that - "Rather than doing nothing and waiting for the storm to pass. Look for an idea that changes the rules."

Below is a small extract that I liked. I am always critical of an idea first mainly because I think what is the point of wasting time discussing something that I think is going to fail. Will try the approach of being 'curious first' (it won't be easy cause being critical is a habit but over time habits can change if you work hard).

Finding a new idea is the most difficult choice because it requires being curious first and asking numerous questions. Then creatively looking for the new ideas in the answers.

The next time you hear a new idea, spend the first 60 seconds just thinking about all of it's possibilities. Being curious first, allows you to find out what is right with the idea. Even if the idea is finally rejected, you are aware of the idea's rightness and can apply that to another challenge you're facing.

Being critical first, is a costly mistake because it allows excuses to drive the creative thought process. It's amazing to watch a typical new idea interchange. Usually within eight seconds someone proclaims what is wrong with the new idea and then all you see are the pitfalls. Just think if everyone had looked at the pitfalls before they leaped, we'd still be crouched in caves sketching animal pictures on walls.

Check out the website if you have time.

Nice Ads :)...

Ads for Sync (powered by Microsoft). The first one and the surgery one are the best according to me. Also like the female with a coffee cup trying to walk into the door.

http://hardknoxlife.wordpress.com/2008/06/18/lessons-of-the-square-watermelon/...

Article on Square Watermelons - http://hardknoxlife.wordpress.com/2008/06/18/lessons-of-the-square-watermelon

The point I love in the article is 'Don't Assume'.

1.) Don’t Assume:

The major problem was that most people had always seen round watermelons so they automatically assumed that square watermelons were impossible before even thinking about the question. Things that you have been doing a certain way your entire life have taken on the aura of the round watermelon and you likely don’t even take the time to consider if there is another way to do it. Breaking yourself from assuming this way can greatly improve your overall life as you are constantly looking for new and better ways to do things.
