The coffee drinkers of Mumbai aren't coffee drinkers at all really...
Whether you check out a Bariasta, Cafe Coffee Day (better known as CCD) or a Mocha (though its not a real coffee shop - thatÂs how it originally started if I remember correctly), they are always crowded.
If you wonder why, its not because people here love their coffee...it is because these places are 'hang out joints'...You will rarely see someone walk into a Barista or CCD, and order something as a take out. Theyaren'tnÂt there because they want coffee...they are there because these cafes provide them a place where they can sit around/meet up with friends and hang out. Of course all of this is never free - everything has a price right. And what a price it is. A coffee that costs over Rs.30 is nothing but exploitation. And most of the time you end up buying something more than just a normal coffee. But at the end of the day its all about the cost v/s the benefits. Lots of people today have disposable incomes. They'd rather spend it at a cool cafe, drinking coffee looking cool, rather than sitting at a sea face etc eating sing channa. I wonder how Starbucks will do in India. Lets see when they finally set up shop here. One thing is for sure - they have a ready market. Only the demand is not for coffee but for hang out joints
